I do the same thing to get the rods on/off, but it helps to have a way to hold 
the crank still. I clamp a flywheel in a big vice and then attach the crank to it. 
At least this keeps half the parts from moving around.

OHOH, I only tried plastigauge once and haven't done it again in years. There 
just doesn't seem to be any point with VW bearings.
