<x-charset iso-8859-1>Hi just a report on taking my T3 drag racing on the weekend. My 1966 Fastback has 2275. Mostly a Scat race ready engine with Superflow heads. 1 5/8 extractors. Porsche cooling system. Twin weber 44 IDF's. Berg pully and pushrods. Gear box is still stock. Wheels are porsche cookie cutters with 195/60 R15 all around. Car is street legal, and was driven an hour to work and back two days before the meet. Only change for track was removal of muffler and addition of stinger. Car idles at 900rpm and in second gear pull hard from 1800 rpm to over 6000. Should pull to 6500 or so. Well the car is capable of sub 15's but it didn't occur this meeting. I only got two runs in. No burnouts, as gearbox is stock and tyres were new and sticky. No wheel spin at all off the line. Air temp as 24 degrees C and humidity a nice low 20%. First run was very gentle off the line with a 2.5 60 foot time. Changed gear under 5000 in first, 6000 in second and 6000 in third. Forth is a non-event, with hardly any guts behind it. 16.2 @ 84mph Second run was better. Much slower reaction time, However a 2sec 60 foot time. Changed at 6000 1st, 6200 second, 6200 third and then took the power right off. Why? Because there was a trail of white smoke behind the car, with some in the cabin. Shut off the Fuel pumps. Shut off the ignition, rolled off the end of the track, jumped out and opened the boot. A bit of smoke, but no flames. Closer inspection showed that the bugpack breather box had filled, and overflowed. This pushed out on to the manifolds, then to the extractors. Oil also came out of the dipstick as well. (Note: this is a type 1 configured motor with a porsche fan to cool it.) Went to restart the engine and oil pressure went to 125 psi at idle.(Maximum) Head temps, 150f and oil temp at 80C. Prior to race oil pressure was 20psi at idle. Head temps and oil temps very similar. Shut down imediately. Put car on trailer and back to pits. While discussing with other VW enthusiasts in pits, noticed the cause of the problem. The nut had vibrated off the oil pressure sender during race, letting wire disconnect from engine. No flow of current ment gauge instantly maxed out. reconnected, Started engine and 40 PSI. All ok. Idled well, sounded fine. In the second run though, the car crossed line at 15.5 @ 84 mph. Next time, less oil, bigger breather box with drain, and tighten the rocker covers a bit more. (Superflows tend to loosen continually, even with spring locks. Maybe even some dyno time to get the webbers just right. Not sure about the dipstick though. Got a good crowd around the car though. Mostly V8 boys came and checked it, asked lots of questions. Late model 4 cylinders woudn't even make eye contact though. As time goes on, will keep people updated. Cheers, James C. 66 Fastback - 2275 All Scat with some Gene Berg goodies. Superflow Heads.
