<x-charset iso-8859-1>> When you tell your friends and neighbors (er, I suppose I mean > 'neighbours'!) that you're going to the U.S. this summer, and they ask > "where in the U.S. will you be going?" ...do you tell them "Madison" or > "Parma"? :) > I usually say I'm flying to Chicago, then start to explain about Jim, Madison (WI) and Parma (ID). They've heard of Parma in Italy (where they make the famous ham), and Chicago, but I doubt most had any idea where Idaho is - I've had to print out a states map to keep it fresh in my mind. They seem pretty impressed that I'm doing a sort of 'Thelma and Louise', and quite envy the idea I think. States like Wyoming conjure up magical images of cowboys, but I guess dusty and hot is how we'll find them! It's still quite a treat for most Brits to go to the USA, even as tourists, though it's gradually getting more common. Having gone to Germany and France with school exchange pupils, I enjoy meeting people with other cultures - it makes the experience more worthwhile. Dave.
