Re: Lifting a T3 & Baja T3's

<x-charset iso-8859-1>

What I did for the rear was to add a pair of coil over shocks that
are usually used for Baja bugs, Bought them from JC whitney but are
available virtually any place that sells VW aircooled parts. These
are height adjustable. I did this because I did not want to do the
opposesite of what people do for lowering (move the torsion bar
spline position on the rear arms), I have found that this tends
to twist the already weakened or sagging torsion bar beyond the
original design, sometimes they will snap under heavy bouncing
use/road. I used to use airshocks for the rear but I always
had a problem keeping the air in them, I went through two pairs
of these.

On the front suspension I have just moved the bottom torsion
bar two splines up , the opposite of what people do for lowering.
I use stock tires from Firestone ( 165R15 )and stock rims.
I have a deep sump and an aftermarket header/exhaust system and
RARELY scrape the bottom. I drive the car in Tijuana, Mexico everyday
since I live there but work in the USA. Tijuana has pretty bad
roads and traffic requiring getting on sidewalks to go around
the many accidents and broken down cars, busses that plug up
the supermarket entrances. I also drive in the many unpaved
neighborhood roads that are in worse condition than most country
dirt roads down there. This little lift is enough and is just a
few inches above the original factory height.

Let me know if you need some specific details on what I have
mentioned.

Leon,
Do you have some pointers as to how to go about lifting the suspension on a
T3 - I don't want a radical lift, I was thinking of just a bit more ground
clearance (I don't want to destroy the exhaust or transmission pan). I have
recently got my 68 (Topless) Auto F/B running & it is a bit low - seems to
have back end 'sag'. The original reason I built the car was to have some
fun driving about on the dirt roads & in the 'boondocks' near where I live.

BTW do you know what size tyres the Baja T3 in your club is running - The
rims looked std

My car is in the gallery in our San Diego site www.ocvv.org/sandiego . My
car is in the first group
of gallery pictures, it is the last picture, click on it and you will see
that it is the goofy looking
car with eyelids and is higher than the rest, I was going to top it off with
a windsheild shade but
I cannot find one, that will give it a nice 50's frumpy look. It needs to be
raised in order to drive up
on the sidewalk in Mexico.

If you are still curious, a picture of me is in the very last group of
people picture in the gallery.
Click on the picture and you will see me behind the front guy with a white
tee-shirt holding a little
girl . I am the one with a big smile doing the peace sign.
