There's more than one "typical" failure mode. At least one of them fails lean. 
The PS on my '72 failed lean.

In spite of what much of the literature says, NONE of the type 3s have 
adjustable ECUs. Even on the D-Jetronic ECUs which were adjustable, that 
was only an idle adjustment. I don't know if it had any effect off idle.
