The wood was in there for just the opposite reason. It is an oil baffle
to limit how much oil went up the push rod to the rocker arms. I have
even put pipe cleaners into push rods. on engines that were oiling the
upper end "too well".
This wood also stiffened the push rod. On a 36hp, the push rod/cam
follower are one piece, and DO NOT rotate.
