<x-charset iso-8859-1>hello mark. its odd but i too prefer the early piston opperated carbs as well . the important and often overlooked thing here is the setting of the choke gap cold with a feeler gauge as explained in the haynes a difference here of .1mm can mean 200rpm faster cold idle . i set this gap at .9 mm in the winter (idles at about 1500rpm ) and then reduce this to about .6mm on the spring tune up this gives me around 100rpm and is ok for summer use. sounds like these carbs have been rebushed previously as ive never seen any from the factory that had any form of bushings in them the spindles allways run in the housing. as for your jetting please bear in mind that in 73 they were being forced to tighten up emmisions and try to get mpg down compared to power having fitted at some point all the jets available in my carbs ive ended on 132.5 mains as the most power producing jets my mpg on a long run is about 28/30. i would be tempted to run the later butterflys with the 4 proggresion drillings as this should give smoother pick up from a standstill they will work with the earlier main carb bodys because the idle neadle is finer it will give you better adjustment. make sure these both come to the same shaped point and that they are clean and have not been ridged where they have been screwed in to far to hard by a po. any more questions feel free but im only here now having only just got back again until mid june then im of to canada for a while. best o luck. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org </x-charset>
