What do you mean by that? Is the gen light flickering? Measure the system voltage with the engine revving at cruising rpm. You want to see a steady voltage of >14V. If it's lower than about 13.5V, the voltage regulator is out. This condition will make you run rich.

Sounds like running quite rich. White smoke indicates unburned fuel. Step one is check routine tune-up items (e.g., valve adjustment, dwell, timing, etc.). If you still have trouble after that, write back and we'll go from there.
