As a former VW mechanic, I prefer the '70-'71 Type 3, the '67 Type 1,
and I think possibly the '67 Type 2, all for dependability and service
reasons. Type 2 is a tough one to decide.
I wouldn't want a '71 Type 1 because it WAS the first year for the
McPherson struts. There were LOTS of problems with the struts and lower
control arm bushings.
