[T3] type 3 engine question

I've had a type1 or 2 vw for the last 30 years. I just aquired my first type
3, a 71 fastback. I have never really paid much attention to type 3's. So
for the ignorant question; are the case, piston/cylinders and heads the same
as type 1 engines? Other commonalities?
