Note that from the flywheel end you'd be UNSCREWING the gland nut, so it might be best to do this via the pulley nut. You have to turn the engine in the usual forward direction. If you do this, you should make sure you have oil in the crankcase, and take out all the plugs and crank it for awhile to pump oil out over everything.
