>>In Vermont, land of tree huggers and private rights, the emmissions test for a car up through 1996 consists of checking for a gas cap rather than a trusty old rag and looking for exhaust leaks. 1996 and newer cars are required to be checked for OBD II compliance (pluging into a computer for diagnostic info). No tailpipe sniffing here...maybe you should just sell me that old polluter.....:) But there aren't any old cars in New England! Having grown up in Michigan and NH, I had no idea what that meant. There are so many 60's and 70's hundred dollar beaters on the west coast. These cars are simply cheap transport used as daily drivers, not Sunday cruisers owned by a vintage enthusiasts. There's a little more reason to smog old cars putting on these many cumulative miles. Although Portland has a 25 year rule, I've been meaning to visit the DMV just to help me tune the engine.
