The idle increases alot and the timing mark moves. Okay, good. That removes one rather simple, but expensive possibility (bad vac advance can.) I'd check for a vacuum leak. Shake things around and make sure there are no loose intake manifold nuts. See if doing things to hoses makes any difference. Is something leaking?
