[T3] a big problem with my squareback engine i need help please

i had a problem with  my 1971 squareback that my friend was driving after i 
purchased it on sat evening for only 1500 . Again the squareback is beautiful 
inside and out up and down ok so he was driving it on the highway and all of 
a sudden it started to backfire like crazy. And he told me his back hurt from 
all the jerking inside the car and he said other than that it ran beautiful 
he said he spoke to some people and they mentioned that one of the i believe 
the heads might of broke and he also said we have to do a compresion test 
does anyone have any more helpful hints that can help me get my baby on the 
road
