The intake ports on the type 4 head are just a completely different shape. There would be no point at all in going to a 1.7 or 1.8L type 4 engine as this size is easily done in a type 3 engine at half the price. Note also that the 1.8 engine parts are lower production and often cost MORE than 2.0 parts. There's a LOT that can be done to a 1600 cc type 3 engine that will improve its pep without giving up on reliability and driveablity.
