There ARE coil testers which exercise a coil without driving the car to check 
it to see if it eventually starts to short out. You can measure the primary and 
secondary resistances and compare with the specs-see the info in the 
Bentley on this.

In general, the only way to be sure is to do a substitution of a good coil.
