What they physically refer to is the compression height of the piston. That's the distance from the piston crown to the center of the wrist pin. When you build a stroker (often accompanied by longer rods), it's preferable to decrease the compression height to keep the engine from getting too wide. For super-dooper-wild applications (beyond even what John's "C" pistons are), we can specify pistons for our custom sets that require you to put on the oil ring AFTER the wrist pin! This can put compression height below 1". This is NOT recommended unless you have a big enough engine to actually want it, as the life of components like that does decrease. Then again, for someone with a 90mm stroke and a 5.7" rod, you aren't looking for long life... :-).
