<x-charset iso-8859-1>it depends on what the "optimal" timing is. The problem with a 009 or 050 is you are timing it for full advance, and letting the rest of the curve fall "wherever". So, timing at full advance may be correct, but a compromise everywhere else (including idle). THIS is the reason for a Safeguard, or a custom curved ignition (mallory, MSD, etc). I have seen plenty of performance engines that wanted 26 degrees total timing. If you use a 009/050, this puts your idle timing in the stupid range of TDC or even retarded. You should have about 7 BTDC at idle, and 19 degrees in the distributor, if this is your situation. Take the distributor apart and bend the tabs to restrict the amount of advance (Shad's VWT article covered this in detail). Find what full advance the engine wants (from 3K UP, don't pay attention to timing below 3K until after the full advance setting is done). Calculate the advance needed to get 7 at idle, adjust the distributor. Then, you have to adjust how fast that curve comes in. If it's a Mallory, the grey/grey combo is nutz on.
