Okay, it cranks fine, but it doesn't fire, except maybe a couple of times.

Sorry, for this use, it could be 2", but 2' is more generally useful. Use 
whatever you can get. In this application, clip it from the 12V input to the 12V 
output; I think that is a red wire to a red wire. It will spark when you connect 
it and you should hear the pump run.
