[T3] hot and lean

<x-charset iso-8859-1>My apologies in advance for the long story, but feel the need to provide
some background...

Having just recently installed a new set of Weber 34icts on my 1600dp w/7K
mi., I have been reluctant to drive it any distance until I got it running
properly. It's definitely been running lean with the factory installed main
and idle jets.

Unfortunately, I had no choice to drive it to L.A. and back a few weekends
ago, approximately 200 miles round trip. I tried to be easy on her but
after 2 hours of driving in the heat and traffic, I pulled into my
destination and there was a rather unhealthy noise coming from the engine.
I'm not sure how to describe it but it was a scraping noise, to me sounding
like a bearing noise. I was there for the weekend so I shut her down and
gave no thought to it until I had to leave.

When I fired her up, the noise as it sounded previously had disappeared.
What I did notice was that the engine sounded a bit different, with kind of
a faint knocking noise. But I drove her home without incident and brought
it to my local VW mechanic during the following week where he could not
identify any problem other than the need for larger jets.

I've changed the oil and found nothing unusual and I've checked the plugs
and they were light brown but looked pretty good to me. I am trying to
determine how much, if any, damage may have been done. Other than the
slightly altered sound of the engine, it seems to run fine, but I'm only
driving it 20 or so miles at a time up to 60 miles a day.

So, the bottom line is that I've been planning to go to Parma and am now
concerned that my notch may not be up for the almost 2K mi. round trip. I'm
really psyched for the trip but would hate to have to R&R my engine at
who-knows-where along the way. Part of me says "damn the torpedoes, full
steam ahead" while my conservative side says check it out carefully and
perhaps consider forgoing the Invasion.

Anyone?
