<x-charset iso-8859-1>Russ might call it a screwup, but I expect that it is or has been policy in many states to ignore the model-year designation altogether in registering vehicles. I'd be interested to hear how it's handled in Europe. As an example, on my Arizona title for my BMW 600, under 'year' is written 1960. Under 'no/yr first registered' it says 01/1960. This information was transferred unquestioned from a California title about 20 years ago, and I have little doubt that the same thing happened when the car moved from probably New York sometime in the early '60s. The point of the story is that BMW did not continue the 600 for the '60 model year; the car is a '59. Type 3 content: The title on my Ghia shows accurately that it was first registered in July '66. Although not specified by Arizona, I know from other documentation that this happened in Germany and the car didn't arrive in California until a few months later.
