Sounds like lack of brake pedal freeplay.  Has the pedal assembly been out
of the car?  Have they readjusted the length of the brake pedal pushrod?
If so, that's a 'no-no' for the dual-circuit m/c.  The free play must be
adjusted by moving the pedal stop plate.  Yes, really!  If not the system
can pressurise over a few miles.

It may alternatively be a collapsed flexible hose acting as a non-return
valve.  Fluid pressure would be maintained after braking - this would be
likely to happen very soon in the journey.  A turn one way might let one of
the hoses relax.  If the hoses are old they are probably doing that.
