I think the only thing that keeps the front and rear U-shaped pieces in there 
are a couple of setscrews. I'd want to be careful with putting a simple 
download on that bar, for fear that the cantilevered load might just pull it out 
of its socket. At least do some lashing/bungies to add a forward force to the 
rear crossbar to hold it in place.

The same thing would apply to simple weight applied to the front crossbar, 
but at least air drag would tend to pull the front piece INTO place, rather than 
out.
