<x-charset iso-8859-1>BenD=> it backfired, and the left carb caught on fire Backfire indicates a severe timing problem. I'd suggest running the valves again -- make sure they're opening in the right order -- then recheck spark timing. => any tricks for initially syncing the carbs Start by setting the throttle valves with the idle screws, long linkage rods off. They should both be open exactly one turn at idle. The Haynes manual has a pretty good procedure. I've found it's a little tight on the volume screw, though; start those at about two and a half turns open. Do your volume adjustments at warm idle with the linkage off. If you don't have a Uni-Syn or similar volume sync tool, get one. Be sure your balance pipe is clear, in good condition and well sealed to the manifolds.
