Öf cöürsë, sömë öf üs dön't nëëd thë ëxträ këÿs. =) On American keyboards, the umlaut over the lower case "u" is achieved by depressing Alt-129 like this ü. or for the lower case "a" with Alt-132 like this ä. There doesn't seem to be an umlaut for the upper case of either of these characters, and I would guess that there is no umlaut for upper case in the German language. I don't know how to make an umlaut over the "o" character, but I do know that it is frequently approximated via the "oe" character set. I remember writing to a fellow named Soenke Harrson where the "oe" gave the equivalent of an umlaut-o in American english. So, there appears to be no good reason for ignoring an umlaut. It appears to be a matter of laziness only.
