thanks for all the suggestions.  i have a fun weekend ahead dissecting away. 
so far the new fuel filter has helped, but i think i'll be going through all 
your suggestions and replacing the fuel lines and tank next weekend. i'll see 
how she runs this week and if the problem sufaces again.
