I checked them when I cleaned up the carbs- blowing into them and connecting
them to a 12V PSU- they seem to work OK

If you do find a figure, that would be cool- one more thing to eliminate
from my suspicion list.
I was loath to replace the needle valves as they looked much better quality
than the replacements- with steel ball ends and ally washers. I only had one
fibre washer per side in the kit to use.
What I have noticed is that when the faulty needle valve was in there,
petrol would intermittently gush out of the main jet tube, and now it starts
to gush out on 1&2 a while before it does on 3&4 when I gradually increase
the RPMs. This is why I suspect the float level- I'm guessing that the right
side is higher than the left?

Maybe it wasn't sticking but rather not seating right- but in either case it
was causing that side to run very rich- gushing out of main jet at idle.

Not sure but the engine seems to respond OK, just runs a bit lumpy- very
lumpy when cold (stalls very easily)

Usually they seem perfectly matched but today I noticed that R carb was
opening a lot slower than L- If I blipped the throttle though, it catches
up-. I did notice that the choke mechys were a bit "slow" when I cleaned the
carbs- particularly the stepped throttle lifting cam, but couldn't decide if
they were meant to be like that. I think I'll clean them next time and
re-lube.

Thanks again Neil, any more suggestions greatly appreciated- I WILL sort
this out- its not THAT bad (I drive it to and from work everyday)- its just
not right
