I am sort of miffed. Marc Bona had me cut off from bidding on the reverse lights that he was selling on Ebay. He decided that I was a dumb cluck because I didn't know how Ebay worked, and he canceled my bid and instigated some sort of block to the Ebay system telling me to get lost and don't come back. I had written an E-mail saying what a "shitty deal" this was. The starting bid was $4.99 with a $0.50 increment. So I bid $5.24 and the system automatically outbid me. I then tried $5.75 and $6.00 as I recall. both times I was automatically outbid. Then, I bid $25 to see what's up and got the high bid. I wrote a message about the shitty deal and how that should be grounds for a "no-bid on my part, what do you think?" I didn't really mean that, because the lights would have been a nice addition even at $25. But Marc canceled me out and had me cut off because I didn't understand how the system worked. Here's what Marc had to say about it: ".... I know from your feedback that you're new to e-bay, but I assure you I did not set up any "automatic bid". it's called "proxy bidding". When a bidder places a bid and is the first bidder, even if he bids $300.00, if the minimum bid is $4.99 the bid is only showed (SIC) as $4.99. Then when a second or third or fourth bidder places a bid that is under his maximum bid amount ($300.00), the system automatically bids for him until he is outbid by another bidder. This is the way e-bay works and has always worked. If you feel you are "slighted" I can cancel your bid, no problem to me. You may want to read the FAQ on e-bay and learn a little about the system before you start bidding. Marc" First, I have bought about six items off of Ebay during the past year, and I never heard of this system before. Had I been expecting it, I wouldn't have complained. I'm not sure that I understand it even after Marc explained it. His comment about reading the FAQ on E-bay didn't set too well, either. What does a man hafta do, just inch up on the bid by the incremental price? I did that three times before going to a still good bid of $25. I was mainly bitching about Ebay. But Marc canceled me and in effect told me to get lost. He wants nothing more to do with me. Does everyone except me know how Ebay works? How would you treat the incremental bidding, say if you really wanted an item, weren't aware of how Ebay worked. And after reading Marc's e-mail, I'm still not sure what to do about it. Do you continually increment your bid at the incremental rate until you finally get the high bid? That's dumb!
