I'm not completely sure what your system looks like, but mufflers which are just attached at the flange (input) end will usually break off. The best place to support the other end of the muffler is from some other part of the exhaust system so that you create a triangle with as few pieces as possible. If this is just a standard extractor exhaust in a square then the rattle is most likely the outer end of the muffler hitting the body where it exits the car.
