<x-charset Windows-1252>I took my '67 to be smogged yesterday and it failed. Crap. 1967 is the first year that has to be smogged too. I need some advice on what I can do to reduce the emissions so I may pass. Here are the results: Loaded Loaded Loaded Idle Idle Idle Pollutant Reading Standard Result Reading Standard Result --------------- ------- -------- ------ ------- -------- ------ Hydrocarbons 330 500 PASS 1654 500 FAIL (HC) in PPM Carbon Monoxide 8.10 4.20 FAIL 7.86 5.50 FAIL (CO) in % Specs (settings double-checked tonight): 1. Plug wires and plugs are new as of 1,000 miles ago, plugs set to 0.7 mm 2. Carbs. have been synched at idle and checked at 1750 rpms via my Unisyn 3. Dwell is 46 degrees 4. Timing is 7.5 BTDC on an 009 distributor 5. Cap, rotor, points and condensor are of unknown age, all parts look good except the points have a small pit. All parts appear to be Bosch. 6. Idle set to 750 rpm. 7. No intake leaks 8. Carbs are as I bought the car, I have not rebuilt them, they are very clean and appear to be set correctly - linkage, etc.. 9. Chokes set. Possible issues: 1. Idle change not very noticeable when disconnecting the #3 spark plug cable, all other 3 wires nearly stall the engine. Plug wire is sparking and is attached tightly. 2. I double-checked the mixture screws tonight, they were slightly off - too rich, especially the left side carb.. The left side mixture screw does not drop the idle until it almost completely closed. It appears to be correctly set when it is only 1/2 turn out from closed. Right side is turned about 1 - 1 1/4 turns out. 3. My blue coil gets really hot after engine idles for a while, normal? 4. I noticed today that my engine has no draft tube seal or the pipe that connects to the breather mount, the pipe must have snapped off at some point. There is also no spring under the breather cap, is this normal for a '67? There is a little wire bundle thing in there. I run Super Premium gas - 92 octane. Aside from failing smog, this Squareback is probably the nicest running VW I have ever owned. Thanks!
