You WANT to use a later crank. I've never bothered with 8 dowels, but I do buy the longer dowels from Berg and ream the crank holes to fit. I have a modified reamer that makes this fairly easy. I don't think the 8 dowels are necessary unless you are planning a lightened flywheel and drag-race starts.
