The lightbulb is coming on, so mine is "normal" and that third digit is I
suppose understood by what your car really is?!

The VIN I believe is what you are referring to, it also has the first 2
stamped, raised (just as the spot above it) and the rest of that number
(starting with the 6 for model year) is stamped, pressed, in a different
manner.  I wonder if some of the tags have that third digit pressed in by
the model number?
