It depends on whether the syncros have ever been replaced before. The
replacements were the cheaper ones.
I would go with the GL-4 oil just to be on the safe side. The GL-5 made
the trannies harder to shift too. Too much surface tension on the oil.
GL-5 was introduced for the automatic differentials, to provide
lubrication for the high hypoid shear loads in the automatics. With GL-4
in an automatic differential, the ring and pinion would last more than a
hundred miles or so.
If you ever get a chance to look at an automatic differential, look at
the extreme hypoid offset.
