4.5" were the widest that VW provided for type 3s. I believe there may have 
been some specials that were wider and provided with some beetles, but 
these, as well as all the aftermarket wheels out there, have the wrong offset. 
A reasonable alternative might be to get some of these and let your shop 
alter the offset for you. That is actually a pretty good option.

If you have the choice, I'd stick with the standard type 3 offset, which was 
46mm.
