<x-charset iso-8859-1>Hey Thomas- There's no such thing as a factory A/C installation. It was a dealer accessory. The two largest aftermarket companies in the US that developed them are VPC (Volkswagen Products Corp, formerly Delinair) and DPD (Don P. Dixon Co.). The height of the vents in the evaporator will give away what kind you have. Re: compressor mounting in the engine, because it was setup to be a quick-and-dirty aftermarket install, it had a really bad design. There is a piece that bolts in the center of the fan assembly and places a pulley to the rear (FIF) of the fan. Then, two big holes with a slot in between are punched in the sheet metal shrouding around the fan inlet to let the belt go through. The FI aircleaner is moved a little (no big deal) and the compressor is mounted atop the cast fan shrouding to the right. The big design flaw is that they have compromised the engine cooling with the belt! They *should* have made a sheet metal addition to shroud the A/C belt similar to how VW shrouded the generator belt... The compressor is a York 2-cylinder compressor, and unless you want a vintage look, is worth leaving aside. A modern compressor, like a 5-piston Sanden, is much more efficient, so at cruise your engine has an almost unnoticable load on it with the A/C on. Automotive A/C supply shops *should* be able to locate a "conversion kit." Both the York and the Sanden have very standard bolt patterns, and there are weld-on kits that convert one kind of bracket into the other. Tackle those two things, and the result will be an engine with A/C and no additional penalty, putting to rest the myth that A/C kills your VW! :-) Drop me a line if you have any more questions... I have 2 Sq. Backs (1971 and 1973), and have a question about the factory installed A/C. Does anybody have pictures of how the original compressor mounted on the engine. I am scratching my head trying to figure out how it fit into the engine compartment. BTW, I do not seem to have the compressor in the many boxes of parts I recieved with the cars, but all the rest of the componets are there. I am currently working on restoring the engine and was pondering the A/C installation. Thanks for the help. > > Thomas > > ------------------------------------------------------------------- > List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org > > </x-charset>
