Second thoughts: The rod should be straight. If it is bent in such a way that 
the front end can sag too much, the shift lever ball might not fit all the way 
into that socket and it might not stay in place.

There is also the possibility that the plate where the bushing mounts has 
broken free, leaving the shift rod completely unsupported. This would also 
explain your problem and is easy to check for.
