The thing to do is to just USE the muffler and upper heat exchangers together, until the muffler rusts out. After that, you can cut off the muffler without guilt. I've never succeeded in separating the 2 items without cutting the muffler. I actually do this a LOT. I've bought quite a few mufflers with small HEs attached. I just use them that way.
