I would expect it to burn up trying to put out 12V, and, yes, this would take the regulator with it. > Once I figured this out and switched it all to 12v, my problem seemed to go > away. This sounds like your only unexplained failure. The shop is probably a perfect place to get to work on your generator again. BTW, the whine COULD be bearings, but it could also just be dirt on the pole pieces. I've had both. > The last time was the only time that I had personally re-installed the > generator. Keep in mind that VERY few mechanics know how to orient the type 3 generator the proper way. > Knowing my track record for generators - that's why I was thinking there is > something causing it to burn out. This is pretty clearly a bad connection somewhere. check around the regulator first, but it could be around the fuse box. If any of your electrical connectors have been replaced, suspect these as the original crimp quality is impossible for us to duplicate, or even approach. Be sure to check the grounds, too. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
