Excessive sparking and rapid wear of the brushes are signs that the commutator is rough or out of round. To fix this, you can either exchange your generator for a rebuilt one (if so, I recommend a genuine Bosch rebuild) or take the generator to an automotive electric repair shop and ask them to "turn the commutator."
