Nevertheless, as your Type4 is a Type46 Variant or wagon or squareback and if it has a chassis number beginning with *464 ........* and if it is a US spec vehicle, then it should have as original equipment an EC series 1.8litre motor equipped with Bosch L-Jetronic AFC fuel injection. This engine was a USA only engine (and Canada) and was in production from 01Aug1973 i.e. for 1974 models). For verification of this I refer you to the Type4 section of the VW ETKA CD-ROM (USA version) parts catalogue where it lists engine codes, dates etc. Alternatively, check out Jens Vagelpohl's Type4 web site at: http://www.type4.org/technology/enginecodes_html noting also the footnotes. Alternatively, see "Road & Track Buyer's Guide for 1974" page 125 or "VW Greats" March/April 1974 page 17. Both describe the differences between the 1.8litre automatic transmission only 4-door and wagon on the one hand and the 1.7litre manual transmission 2-door on the other. For 1974 for both USA and California, the 4-door sedan and 2-door wagon came only with 1.8litre EC series motors and Bosch L-jetronic AFC fuel injection. For 1974 for USA (but not California) the 2-door sedan came only with the smaller but more powerful 1.7litre EA series motor and Bosch D-jetronic EFI fuel injection. The 2-door stayed the same as for 1973 models and was not officially sold in California in 1974 - for exhaust emissions reasons. (The 2-door is very rare in USA.)
