You can actually do a very good job of straightening around the timing hole with the part in the car. I generally do this with everything apart, but if the engine is in the car, you can still do this with some difficulty. It's harder on early cars with that odd rear center "engine mount," but on late cars you can just remove the handle and get pretty good access for a hammer.
