Hmm, I seem to recall reading in my tattered 1969 'Motors' manual a bit on generators, and polarizing them after rebuilding them. I forget the details, but it said to basically hit it with DC while it was hooked up a certain way. Could it be that magnetism is working against you? I can scan those pages again and secure the data if you wish...
