The air cleaner supplies pre-warmed air - don't know what temperatures are like there - probably high, so it may be irrelevant. It must also slightly restrict the amount of air flow, so it is better (essential?) to tune up with it in place. I have a system to balance carbs with the air-cleaner in place too - much the best way, but it needs a mod of the air-cleaner. Conking out when slowing in reverse could be slopping of fuel into the overflow pipe from one carb, particularly if the fuel level is rather high. Are your float needle valves leak-free? That would also give a richer idle as the carb would over-fill easier when the rate of fuel used is small. Dave.
