There's something wrong with your mixture, unless you have a valve problem. If the compression is okay then your mixture is either too rich or too lean. This is 72 FI, right? If so, make sure that the vac hose from the IAD to the pressure sensor is installed on BOTH ends. Go over the timing with a timing light and the Bentley manual. There's not substitute for this on a 72. Check the battery voltage with the engine running at med rpm. It should be 14.1- 14.4V.
