You could cut a 1/2 or 3/4 inch thick piece of plywood to fit the opening, (just make sure it overlaps the metal lip for the gasket). Then you could use construction screws through the plywood on the outside and into a 2 x4, or some of the plywood scraps on the inside. And sandwich the metal gasket lip between the pieces of wood. Should do a fine job of sealing things up. Hope this is feasable?
