If you look at the plumbing under the back seat you will see that just shutting off the rear heat automatically diverts this flow to the front. To maximize your flow to the windshield you should turn the rear heat off AND close the front footwell vents off. If your heater channels are intact this will push all the air to the windshield. What you CAN and should do, is verify that both sides of the main heater control cable are intact and working (not rusted away on one side, just in front of the engine,) and that you have the 2 large hoses running from the heat exchangers forward to the mixer boxes as well as the 2 smaller hoses that run above them.
