[T3] [T3]RE: Auto Transmission

I went this weekend to pick up my new 71 Orange Squareback. The guy
said everything was ready, so on Sat. I drove the 2 hours to pick it up, but
it had no brakes, the line had a hole in it, he had said they may need bled,
I guess that's one way to put it! Since I did not have sufficient tools or
work space, he said he would replace the line and I could pick it up
tomorrow.
So I came back on Sunday and was set to drive back at 45mph, WOW,
was that ever fun ;). Since you have the engine full throttle in 2nd, it
gets quite loud. I also found out that Squarebacks are a little louder on
the inside than Fastbacks. I guess its obvious with the way the
compartments are set up, but I never thought about it. The 2 hour drive now
took about 3 1/4 hours. The engine ran like a champ. But the brakes up
front definitely need more than bled, there seems to be quite a lot of
corrosion (grinding and pulling).
I have had a 69 Square and a 72 Fastback that were automatics but
neither were as smooth as this car. No jerking, no clunking I was amazed,
the absence of 3rd was the only problem. Hopefully, that is a good sign
that it may just need some adjustment and clean tranny fluid. We did not
get back till dark so I will need to further investigate.
Also, the odometer was broken so the sellers assertion that it had
56,000 was wrong, but I expected as much. Apparently, he bought it at a
Volunteers of America auction, and the license plates show that it has not
been registered since 1982. The car is still in excellent condition,
interior has no rips, even the carpet is in perfect condition. It has the
stock Sapphire radio and the dash is not cracked (whoohoo). The only
significant rust is on the top of the front fenders, of course, but its not
too bad. It also still has bias ply tires. The one on the spare is a
Continental, isn't that the brand they came with originally?
Well sorry this is so long, you all now the feeling of getting a new
Type 3 and it makes me run at the mouth, er, keyboard.
