You could leave New York. I don't worry so much about people stealing my car as much as I do them stealing the stuff in my car. Which is one of the best things about having a station wagon with a trunk. Your average thief is going to think that the engine is under the "hood" and not seeing anything inside to steal, move on. I just put in a fake alarm flashing LED.
