In a Type 3, you are supposed to see daylight around your engine (but not through/around the cylinders). The top half of the engine is not sealed from the lower half. There is a big rubber bellows/boot that goes from the rear of the engine compartment body to the rear of the fan housing. Make sure this is there and in good condition or you will overheat. You need a Type 3 Bentley manual. It's written specifically for the fuel injected (68-73) US models, but it's still relevant for your earlier car.
