That sounds like the bug orientation of the distributor. The Type 3 and bug are slightly different here. The type 3 is more half past 2. Either way, you should be able to just put the #1 wire in above the mark on the distributor rim, and follow that with wires 4, 3, and 2 in a clockwise direction.
